Undeserved Nostalgia

When I was five,

I said to my

Parents, “What happened

To the good old days?"

-

When I was a babe,

My life was so great.

I want to go back,

But now it’s too late.

-

In kindergarten, it was playtime.

But then the bell rang.

Gather on the carpet for a story.”

I cried and screamed,

Nostalgic for things

Long past, ten seconds before.

-

I fear change and hate the way

That nothing ever stays the same.

From dark to light, and wrong or right.

Even morality fluctuates.

-

If the present is a gift.

Why do we leave it in the past?

Always looking to the future.

We’re not content with what we have.

-

My favorite book is a collage

Of pictures I don’t recall

And forgotten family gatherings.

With tears in my eyes,

Wistful before I was alive.

Wishing to go back to the way things used to be.
