Path of the Patron

Wow. I must have made this before ECCC came into my head, but the themes really fit into the two cosmologies I have formulated for ECCC. No, I don't know the definition of cosmology, why do you ask?

Path of the Patron

This is an idea formed off of what I have seen of Vannamelon’s Youtube Channel.

The world is separated into are sort of like dimensions or universes.

There are the Patrons, which is where the point of view is. The point of view of a Patron shows them to be in the center of the Universe. Literally everything appears to surround them.

The Patrons use terminology to describe the universe: above, below and sideways. But these terms do not accurately depict the universe, it is just a way for them to understand the universe. Remember, a map of the Earth depicts the world in a flat view. Similarly, the Patrons’ view of their universes is not a literal representation of it.

They speak of certain universes being above or below others, but this is not how universes work. They are not above, below or even sideways in relation to each other. It would be just as accurate for a Patron to say that their universe is above a certain universe as it would be to say that their universe is below that same universe. Because both are equally wrong depictions.

Then what is the accurate depiction? I don’t know. All I know is that above, below, and sideways are not very good depictions.

Okay, so what is their view? Here we go.

Patrons believe themselves and their universe to exist in the middle. There are universes above them, and the universe immediately above them, what would be considered adjacent to them, is the universe of Patrons that they are Pact-makers to.

The patrons that believe they exist in the middle claim that there are universes below them. These universes that are below them are home to pact-makers. But Patrons can only make pacts with the pact-makers of the universe directly below them, that is adjacent to them.

Patrons also believe that all Patrons and Pact-makers can be Patrons and Pact-makers. Anyone can be a Patron to a being from a universe adjacently below them, and anyone can be a Pact-maker to a being from a universe adjacently above them.

When a Patron and a Pact-maker make a pact, the Pact-maker gains certain powers. The powers that the Pact-maker gains is dependent on the power that the Patron has and is willing to give up.

So, what does the Patron get out of it? Why would a Patron want to make a pact with some entity from another dimension?  There are a few reasons. Some of the most obvious reasons, at least to the Pact-maker, is that the Patron gets to see through the eyes of the Pact-maker and view the world of the Pact-maker. The Patron also can exert a certain minute influence upon the Pact-maker, so the Patron can in a way, interacct with the world below them through the Pact-maker.

However, very few Patrons make pacts only for these reasons. The main reason that Patrons make pacts is to become more noticed by the Eyes.

Patrons know of the Eyes. Eyes are the beings from the universe to the side of them, Sideways. Sideways is a strange universe. Little is known of it except that it is the realm of the Eyes and it is adjacent with every other universe. Also, it is the source of all power. The true source.

The Eyes are constantly bleeding power, and wherever they look is where the power goes. If something or someone draws the attention of many Eyes, there is a high concentration of power in that thing or person.

It is not well known (if it is known at all) what draws the attention of the Eyes. What they wish to see. It is also unknown how many Eyes are in the Sideways. For not all Eyes are always looking into realms beyond their own. And not Eyes are looking at the same universe.

Because Eyes are the source of all power, one of the best ways to gain power is to become popular among the Eyes. Since, that is not a sure way to gain power, and the Eyes are fickle, they may seem to really enjoy watching a person but turn away for no known reasons, which also turns away their power, it is not very wise to try to gain power solely from the Eyes.

This is why most beings who wish to gain power do so through Pacts.

Pacts are bonds between two beings of adjacent universes that come to an agreement or deal that the person from the lower universe, the Pactmaker, to gain powers from the being from the higher universe, the Patron. In exchange, the Patron may ask the Pact-maker to agree to something or to do something, but the Patron always has the benefit of gaining a bond with the Pact-maker that causes Eyes to notice one when they see the other.

So when an Eye sees the Pact-maker, they will also notice the Patron. When an Eye sees the Patron, they will also notice the Pact-maker. However, the Patron will in almost every case receive more attention than the Pact-maker, and thus more power.

So it is in a Patron’s best interest to form Pacts, so what is holding them back from just constantly forming new Pacts? This is an interesting question. The answer is investment. A Pact is an investment, one that will eventually pay for itself. But a Patron does not always have enough power to start that investment in the first place. Such creatures struggle to survive. They cannot.
