Little Girl Poem
I keep remembering my dreams. My dreams that feature little girls. Little girls that are sometimes secretly evil or violent.
Little girl, keep away from the darkness.
Little girl, keep your lantern on.
Little girl, stay with friends at all times.
Little girl, you must never be alone.
-
Little girl, the metal doors of an airlock.
Little girl, pay them all no mind.
Little girl, pay attention to history.
Little girl, please remember dangers from the past.
-
Little girl, myths of darkness surround you.
Little girl, are you the only one who knows?
Little girl, monsters seek to gouge you.
Little girl, through the doorway of a black hole.
-
Your pal told you to turn off the light.
That it’s too bright. That he can’t sleep.
Oh, why did you listen
To that child.
Now you’re followed
By the darkness creeping.
-
Black oily arms
Like tentacles or flame
Stretch around you
Pulling you back
To a place
You’ve never been.
-
Then why does it seem so familiar?
Why can you see when there is no light?
Why does it seem to spark memories?
Memories? How have you not seen these before?
Watchtower full of guards. You strike them all down.
Your arms are full of barbs. You need no weapons.
-
Lyrics of a myth ring.
Ring in your head.
Lyrics of a prophecy.
Say that you should be dead.
That you are impossible.
You should not exist
You are the daughter of yourself.
The daughter of death.
-
You’ve defeated greater dangers.
More dangerous than yourself.
You’ve fought the humans.
You’ve won and you’ve lost.
From generation to generation.
From years to years, to decades and more.
From centuries that will not exist.
-
You’ve been consumed by the darkness.
You’ve finally returned home.
So many heroes
Wish you great harm.
Yet you are still a child.
You’re a little girl.
-
Little girl, returns to her bedroom.
Little girl, sees many new faces.
Little girl knows what she must do,
So the little girl? She destroys the doors.
-
She breaks out through the crowd of heroes.
But where is their armor? Where are their swords?
She breaks out, into the open.
Outside the building. Into the world.
-
There are other buildings out here.
Buildings made of metal.
These metal buildings have legs.
They move, they take their aim.
With guns upon their heads.
You remember the word—tanks.
-
Little girl, jumps into the sky, dodging a laser blast.
Little girl, doesn’t fall back down.
She can fly. She can cast—spells?
No, there is nothing. There is nothing left.
The monsters of steel give chase.
With lasers, with laser guns.
What can the little girl do but run?
-
Little girl, weaving between laser blasts.
Little girl, watches as the trees, her home, on fire.
Little girl, sees the sun go down.
Little girl, is not afraid of the dark any longer.
-
Massive bright lights stream across the land.
To keep little girl from gaining an advantage.
Bright lights beam through the burning forest.
Bright lights stream like the moon but in force.
-
Little girl, hiding from the humans.
Little girl, what can she do in this new world?
Little girl, but the dangerous, insurmountable, undefeated unaccountable—monstrous mass.
-
Little girl flies through the sky
Blasting down tanks with the lasers from her palms.
Little girl strikes down building-sized tanks.
Little girl attacks because everything is at stake.
-
Her life, her home, her past, her future.
Her friends, are gone. Nothing is left.
Her self is wasted in a dream.
She has no identity, no self-esteem.
-
Who can she be when her world is destroyed?
Her hell she created is gone before her eyes.
Her realm of darkness is burning to dust.
Her home is melting, where can she rest?
