Lawlight: A Preview
They say that the world was made when laws were produced and irrevocably spoken. These laws set in place could not be removed, even if they held mistakes. And they held mistakes. The space-makers hadn’t made a world before. But they had to make more than a world. They needed to build the universe that holds the world. An entire procedure that no one had ever undertaken before.
Some may question this story of the origin of our universe, of our world. But I have seen the space-makers. They are still alive. And they very much dislike when we exploit the mistakes in their laws.
Does it scare you to know that the creators of this world are still watching? Does it scare you that they make mistakes? I, for one, am glad that they make mistakes. If they were as flawless as they pretend they are, they would have caught me long ago.

The laws of nature have been spoken. The primal energies of being first spoken have placed them eternally into the being of the universe. These are not like the laws of our government. We punish those who exploit our laws, abusing loopholes in the laws of nature. Those who find immortality through death. Those who travel faster than light without exceeding the speed limit. Those who manipulate luck and probability to achieve nearly impossible feats as long as there is even the smallest chance of success.
But this crime you have committed is greater than those of which I have spoken. They did not break the law. They merely trespassed it. They still abided by the laws of the universe, they merely undermined those laws because of the imperfections in them. You, however, have done the impossible. You have broken the law.
There is now a fracture in our universe. We do not know how to mend it. The laws cannot be altered. It is impossible. We cannot fix this problem. And neither can you. You claim it was an accident. We don’t believe you. It takes much effort, time and research to undermine the laws without damaging them. You are the first to have caused damage to the structure of the universe. This is not simply done ignorantly.
However, it doesn’t matter whether you were willing or not, whether you were ignorant or aware. You are currently the most dangerous entity in the universe. If you have damaged the universe willingly, you are a traitor to existence itself and deserve nothing less than utter destruction. Yet you plead ignorance. Know this, ignorance does not make you any less dangerous. If you can’t control your ability to crack the walls of reality, then you must be put to death to prevent you from destroying the whole universe.
Either way, the decree of this court is clear. The only course to resolve this situation is to execute you.

She’s just as excited to learn about my powers as I am, but my supernatural abilities break the law. I don’t know what the long-term consequences of breaking the law are, but I do know the short-term problems it causes. The Space-Makers can pin down my location by the giant rift in reality that using my powers creates. They fear that I may rip the universe apart with my powers. If this is a true risk, I won’t use my powers unless there is no other solution.

“A Phoenix? How would a burning bird help?”
“Isn’t it obvious? He’s an amazing lawyer. He defends himself in court without the help of an attorney, and he has yet to receive a guilty verdict for his crimes of immortality. He proves his death. And there is no way for the Space-Makers to prove that he has returned from death, especially since that is impossible. He is the only other person I know to have broken the law. He can help you escape punishment and control your powers.”
“Are you sure he’s actually broken the law? When I use my powers, the universe trembles, light wavers, and the foundations of our being quake. If the Phoenix breaks the law regularly, the universe would have collapsed by now.”
