Chicken
They call me Ace.
I'm a fiery flyer.
Death I’ve escaped.
But now I’m retired.
-
How many times can I die before I fail to rise again?
I’m no longer willing to take that risk, testing Space-Makers’ patience.
I used to throw caution to the wind, and the wind to the ground.
Gusts tear through trees, my wings flapping until I faint and fall down.
-
I was reckless, flamboyant and on fire.
I tested the boundaries and drew the Angels’ ire.
Burning for freedom, my red hot desire.
I continued to soar into forbidden abodes.
-
Up from the ashes, I returned again.
What did it matter if I received a death sentence?
I feared nothing. I thought I was immortal.
But even the Space-Makers can die. I saw it happen.
-
Like a meteor, I streaked through the sky.
I saw the heavens open, and this was my reply.
“Let me into thy paradise! Let me see thy glory!”
The clouds parted, above the hills the Sun tarrys.
-
There they were, the Space-Makers.
Holding back some approaching dangers.
Ripped in two, impaled, a bloodless death.
We were victorious, but the Sun shines less bright.
-
How should I help you if I can't even help myself?
If I become an outlaw, the Angels will have my heart!
Sure, the heart is just a decorative accessory.
I can live without liver or organs sensory.
-
Burning wings weaken as I glide.
Not my fault, but the world will die.
Even without lawbreakers, the enemy will invade.
I don’t want to be here when they arrive.
-
Tear out the terrors of night sky.
I won’t return until the Sun shines bright.
I’m not a coward if I wish to preserve my life.
No! I said I’m not a chicken! I’ll show you! I’ll show you squawk!”
-
Take a stance, take a side, keep the rear, watch for flanks!
On this hill, we’ll never fall. Watch out for mortars aimed at our wall.
I’m not sure why I’ve agreed to this. But at least give me some thanks.
I’ll hold against the army. Take out their legs so they don’t stand so tall.
-
Stay back, my flames are hot.
If you fall down, you’ll be left to rot.
I rise from ashes, I’m all you’ve got.
No one is coming to save you from this spot.
-
Broken metal on the ground.
Graveyard for the caravans.
Why is this outlaw allowed in town?
You really pick the worst friends, man.
-
I won’t be your lawyer, that’s not my job.
I never was good at making my case.
In the end of each session, I’d end up stabbed.
But I’d come back to appeal, at least.
-
Broken hopes lay scattered in the air.
Surely I wish I never went there.
It’s too late now, I know what I saw.
It’s time for you to break the natural law.
-
Fallen people strive to regain civilization.
Outlaws will never prosper in apocalyptic wasteland.
Did they think they’d be able to find a place with light?
I make my own fire, stay close, the stars watch at night.
-
Wanderers find themselves in troubled waters.
I don't trust a ship that sails through the desert.
The sandstorm blows the sail avast.
What are those fish-men? I’m afraid to ask.
-
Wait for the Sun to duck below.
That’s the eye, in case you didn’t know.
But in the night, the stars they’re watchful stare never ends.
So keep in the fires, they blind the heavens.
-
Broken dreams, far from grace you’ve come.
This is no garden of paradise, corruption you succumbed.
Terror in the night. Terror in the night. Terror in the night. Terror in the night.
Lanterns in the sky. Meteors of streaking torches. They are watching. Always watching.
-
Judgment falls on your head.
After this, maybe you deserve death.
Open rebellion against the Space-Makers.
You’re fighting an unwinnable war.
-
But if it’s as you've said. This isn’t a war you started.
It’s been going for generations.
This war will never end, so where do I come in?
We can’t stop what has continued for millennia.
-
Loop-de-loop, avian acrobatics.
Give me the sword, their wings I’ll clip.
Terrorize their natural habitat.
Find the nest for eggs to babysit.
-
Give me a chance, and I’ll jump ship.
I can’t keep fighting like this.
Sorry, lawman, but looks like you’re finished.
Is that an escape? Count me in.
